NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY & PARTNERING HOSPITALS JOIN CHOT
New Center Partner Will Focus On Engineering Improvement Methods in Health Care, Serve As Hub for CHOT Research Projects
Boston, MA, May 7, 2010
Northeastern University has been funded by the National Science Foundation to become a partner university with Texas A&M Health Science Center and Georgia Tech in the Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT). Dr. James Benneyan, a professor in Northeastern's College of Engineering will now serve as an Associate Director of CHOT. Dr. Benneyan is looking forward to contributing to CHOT's mission by focusing on engineering improvement methods in health care. “We want to do for health care what the Toyota Production System, Six Sigma, quality management and industrial engineering did for the automobile and other industries,” said Benneyan.
Northeastern University brings in 4 new health system partners to CHOT: Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, New England VA Healthcare System and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Benneyan anticipates that a number of other Boston-area and neighboring health systems will join the Center soon.
Dr. Larry Gamm, Director of CHOT at Texas A&M Health Science Center is delighted to welcome Northeastern University and the Boston health system members to CHOT. “Dr. Benneyan, his colleagues, and the participating Boston health systems are valuable additions to CHOT. The Center will benefit from their expertise in health management, health engineering methods, and quality health delivery." The new additions bring the Center’s numbers to three universities and 15 health systems engaged in CHOT research. Dr. Gamm added, "These numbers are expected to increase within the next year and continually add to CHOT’s research contributions to transformation in health care on multiple levels.”
Northeastern University is a private research university in Boston and a leader in integrating classroom learning with real-world experience. NU has over 20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and more than 1,800 faculty.
The Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) is an industry-university cooperative research center (I/UCRC) funded by the National Science Foundation and health organizations to conduct research supporting major management, clinical, and information technology innovations in healthcare.
