Thomas Miller, Ph.D., MBA
Thomas R. Miller joined the Texas A&M Health Science Center faculty in 2009 as Assistant Professor at the School of Rural Public Health, and he currently teaches health care finance and accounting. Prior to receiving his Ph.D. in 2007, Dr. Miller served as vice president in a national health care management consulting firm with over 25 years of industry experience. In this role, he developed and managed numerous projects, including financial feasibility studies for a wide range of health care facilities; strategic and managed care plans for multi-facility systems and programs; physician groups, and myriad clinical programs; physician-hospital organization planning and development, and clinical joint ventures; affiliation and merger planning for both independent hospitals and members of facilitation for boards, medical staffs, and health care management teams. He served as Director of Operations at Republic Health Corporation, a large multi-hospital system (now part of Tenet).
Dr. Miller is a researcher with over 24 publications. His research interests include: Financial Performance of Health Care Organizations, Pricing and Payment Systems, Hospital Tax-exemption and Community Benefits, and Health Care Cost Analysis. His recent research examined the utilization of various medical services by older adults based on analysis of several large national data sets including Medicare claims data. Dr. Miller's current research areas include the financial performance of health care organizations, evaluation of community benefits, pricing and payment systems, health care cost analysis, and the assessment of the cost and quality relationship.
Dr. Miller received a PhD in Health Services and Policy from the University of Iowa, an MBA from the University of Rochester, and a BS in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Florida State University.
