David Cowan, MSHS
David has twenty six years of experience in healthcare planning and management. He is currently serving as an Executive in Residence and Program Director of the Health Systems Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology. As Executive in Residence, he frequently lectures in the graduate classes and mentors the students. As Program Director, he plans and organizes industry sponsored Graduate Research Assistantships for each of the Masters Students. He is an integral part of the Executive leadership of the Health Systems Institute. He maintains an active healthcare consulting practice as President of Management Systems Consultants, serving a variety of Healthcare clients in the areas of healthcare information technology, facilities planning, financial turnarounds, and strategic planning.
Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he served as Vice President, Performance Improvement with VHA for four years, leading Performance Improvement efforts for 54 Georgia Hospitals and Executive Director of Satisquest, a patient satisfaction survey and consulting company. He was Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign for the Health Systems Program helping to raise over $700,000 to establish a Health Systems professorship. He was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni in the School of Industrial Engineering in 2001.
David was the founding President of the Georgia Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) in 1984. He is a Fellow in HIMSS and has served as the Chairman of its National Conference. He is also a Fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and currently serves on the national board of the its Society for Health Systems.
